PFMS Payment Status Check: Know Your Payment Online

Waiting for a scholarship, a PM-KISAN instalment, a pension or an LPG subsidy that was supposed to reach your bank account? The first place to look is PFMS. A PFMS payment status check tells you whether the government has released the money for your account and whether it was credited, and it takes about two minutes on the official portal.

PFMS, the Public Financial Management System, is run by the Controller General of Accounts under the Ministry of Finance. Government departments use it to send Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) payments, and its public tools let any beneficiary trace those payments without visiting an office.

What a PFMS payment status check shows, and what it does not

The main tool, called Know Your Payment, lists the government payments made to one bank account. For each payment you can see the scheme name, the amount, the date, the credit status and the transaction reference. That is enough to answer the question most people have: has the money for my account been released, and did it land?

What PFMS does not show is your account balance. It is a payment tracking system, not a banking app. If you want the balance of a Jan Dhan or savings account, use your bank’s own channels. Our guide on Jan Dhan account balance check covers the missed call, USSD and app methods.

PFMS payment status check using Know Your Payment

Keep your bank account number and the mobile number registered with the bank ready, then follow these steps on the official portal:

  1. Open the PFMS Know Your Payment page at pfms.nic.in. The page heading reads Payment by Account Number.
  2. In the Bank field, type the first few letters of your bank’s name and select the correct bank from the list that appears.
  3. Enter your account number, then type the same number again in the Confirm Account Number field.
  4. Type the word verification code exactly as shown and choose Send OTP on SMS / Sandes App.
  5. Enter the OTP sent to your bank-registered mobile number and submit.
  6. The screen now lists the payments made to that account, with the scheme name, amount, credit date and status of each one.

Read the status row for the payment you are waiting for. If it shows as credited with a date, the money has reached the account and your bank statement or passbook will show the same entry. Note the transaction reference (UTR) if you need to raise the matter with your bank later.

Tracking a scheme payment with the DBT Status Tracker

Know Your Payment starts from the bank account. The DBT Status Tracker starts from the scheme, which makes it better when you want to know where your application stands, or whether your bank account has passed validation at all.

  1. On pfms.nic.in, open Payment Status and choose DBT Status Tracker.
  2. Select the Category, which is the scheme or portal, for example PMKISAN or NSP for scholarships.
  3. Under DBT Status, choose Beneficiary Validation to check whether your account details have been accepted, or Payment to check the money itself.
  4. Select your bank, then search with your Application Id, Beneficiary Code or Account Number, whichever you have.
  5. Enter the word verification and click Search.

The result shows the stage the record has reached. A validation result tells you whether the account was accepted or rejected and, where recorded, the reason. A payment result shows the sanction and credit status, along with any error reported by the bank.

No payment record found? Work through this list

An empty result does not always mean the money is lost. Check these points in order:

  • Wrong account number. The search only finds payments made to the exact account you enter. Use the account number you gave in the scheme application, not a newer account opened later.
  • The payment has not been released yet. PFMS can only show what the department has pushed into the system. If the scheme portal still shows your instalment as pending, the delay is at the department’s end.
  • Your DBT is mapped to another account. Aadhaar-based payments go to the account seeded in the NPCI mapper, which may not be the account you checked. Run an Aadhaar bank seeding status check to see which bank is mapped.
  • Validation failed. Run the DBT Status Tracker with Beneficiary Validation. A name mismatch between the scheme record and the bank account is a common reason for rejection.
  • The bank returned the payment. Dormant accounts, closed accounts and wrong IFSC details cause returns. Your bank can trace the entry with the UTR shown on PFMS.

Use only the real PFMS website

Several lookalike sites use PFMS in their names and show copied instructions mixed with ads. The genuine portal address is pfms.nic.in. PFMS will never ask for your debit card PIN, CVV, net banking password or full card number, and the only OTP involved is the one the portal itself sends to your bank-registered mobile during the Know Your Payment check. If a page or a caller asks for anything more, close it.

If a payment shows credited on PFMS but the money is not in your account after a reasonable gap, take the UTR and the credit date to your bank branch. And if the issue is a failed transfer from your own account rather than a government payment, see our guide on a UPI payment failed but money debited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PFMS payment status check free?

Yes. Both Know Your Payment and the DBT Status Tracker are free public services on pfms.nic.in. You do not need to register or create an account to use them.

Can I check PFMS payment status by Aadhaar number?

Know Your Payment works with a bank account number, not Aadhaar. The DBT Status Tracker accepts an Application Id, Beneficiary Code or Account Number. Aadhaar comes in at a different step: it decides which account receives Aadhaar-based DBT, which you can verify through the seeding status check.

Why does PFMS show a payment but my passbook does not?

First compare the credit date and the account number on PFMS with your passbook. Payments sometimes land in a different account than expected, especially where Aadhaar mapping points to an older account. If the account and date match and the entry is still missing, ask your bank to trace the UTR.

How old a payment can I see on PFMS?

Know Your Payment lists the government payments recorded against the account, and the DBT Status Tracker is designed for recent scheme records. For older entries, your bank statement for that period is the more reliable record.

The OTP for Know Your Payment is not arriving. What should I do?

The OTP goes to the mobile number registered with your bank account. If you changed your number recently, update it with the bank first. The portal also offers OTP through the Sandes app using the QR code shown on the page.
